About and Mission Statement

The Canadian Association of Jews and Muslims (CAJM) was established in June 1996. Our purpose is to bring members of the Jewish and Muslim communities in Canada closer together, encourage positive interaction, and work together to counter shared problems. Our objectives are to learn, understand and jointly work together, to promote harmony between Canadian Muslims and Jews.

Since September 11, 2001 we share a reinvigorated sense of purpose for our Canadian model of Jewish/Muslim bilateral co-operation in fighting antisemitism and Islamophobia as well as all forms of racism, discrimination, and hate crimes.

We are deeply committed to engaging in open and free discussion of controversial and sensitive issues. Over the years we have applied a variety of approaches to building relationships between our communities including seminars, special events, cultural exchanges, publications, youth activities, exchanges of speakers and community leaders, and facilitated the annual Weekend of Twinning between synagogues and mosques.

We value diversity of opinion and respectfully listen to different viewpoints without finger pointing, generalizing, or blaming either group. When acts of hatred or discrimination impact our communities we speak out as allies to denounce racism of all kinds. Our most important strength is that whatever position CAJM takes, we do it jointly and in support of both groups. CAJM strives to play an educational role for the general public as a model of mutual respect and support.

We invite all like-minded people to join us.
